About

Honest answers, straight from the data.

I Don't Know is a research desk for questions about American life. Ask about attitudes, behavior, work, or wages, and we search the nation's leading social, behavioral, and economic surveys — the General Social Survey and the Census Current Population Survey — and return a plain-language finding.

Every answer comes with the estimate, its uncertainty, the exact question wording, the survey years, the weight used, the unweighted sample size, and the full codebook citation. Nothing is estimated in the browser, and nothing is invented: every number is computed by a statistical engine from the underlying microdata.

The name is the point. When the data can't support a question — the variable wasn't asked that year, the sample is too small, or the topic isn't covered — we say so plainly instead of guessing. "I don't know" is an honest answer, and we think more answers should be.
